The stage at Stiklestad shows the farm Sul in Verdal in 1030.
This was where King Olav and his army encamped the last night before the battle. Here we meet the farmer Torgeir Flekk, his family and servants. In the words and scenes, the author depicts two aspects of the time. The conflict between the new Christianity and old pagan beliefs, and the discord that civil war sowed amongst people also in those times.
A stranger comes riding by and asks the way to Stav. Gamal-Jostein, the grandfather, talks to Gudrun about ancient beliefs and superstitions. Hallgjerd does not like this. After this they continue their conversation about the ancient gods and Gamal-Jostein sings the pagan song "Grottekvadet" (Grotto Ode").
Gudrun, the daughter of Torgeir Flekk and Gudrun, has one of her attacks and those present wonder that the reason for Gudrun´s conditionis. Gudrun once saw her little newborn brother or sister abandoned. Unwanted babies were left out in the woods and abandoned to the cold, hunger and wild animals in the hope that they would not survive. This had also been the custom at Sul. Gudrun has a new attack and the peasants start a pagan dance. In the end, Gudrun has a break down.
Torgeir Kvistad does not like the dance and voices his opinion. The topic of the conversation turns to King Olav and his position. A man dressed in black comes to the farm and hears the discussion about theking and his opponents. Torgeir Kvistad is an opponent of the King and the man in black cape does not like this. His anger gets the better of him and he reveals himself to be Tormod Kolbrunarskald, one of the King´s faithful followers. Torgeir Kvistad leaves Sul in a rage. Gudrid would have nothing to do with the King´s men.
The conversation is about the King and his forthcoming arrival. Torgeir Flekk and his sons offer to fight in the King´s army. Helga Helgesdotter pours Tormod Kolbrunarskald some mead and in return for the mead he sings a song for her. Gamal-Jostein recognizes this follower of the King and Tormod sings for him too.
The King arrives at Sul and Tormod takes him to Torgeir Flekk. Tormod tells the King about all those preparing to march against him. Even though their number is large the King wants to continue the fight in a gentle way.
A gang of robbers, led by the chieftain Avrafaste and his brother Gaukatore, arrive at the farm Sul. They want to join the King´s army inthe battle, but according to the King they have to be baptized, before entering the army.
Gudrun has seen the King bless the fields and this has deeply affected her.
Helga Helgasdotter flirts with the soldier Froste, who asks her todance with him. This makes Einar jealous. Kåre Ljotson starts to argue with Jostein and they fight, sword against sword.
Gudrun has a new attack and the servants try to calm her down with pagan sun dance. The King arrives and sees what is going on. He is digusted by the sun dance. He is told why Gudrun is a victim of these attacks. Gudrid and Torgeir Flekk confess to the King that many years ago they had abandoned a baby in the woods. The King talks to Gudrun about God, Gudrun says the Lord´s Prayer. Torgeir Flekk and his sons ask the King if they can join his men. Kåre Ljotson asks to join the King´s army. Tormod sings a lay.
